The GMAT tests the academic ability of an applicant. The test score is seen as a measure of the ability of an applicant to complete the requirements of an MBA program.

FORMAT  OF  THE  GMAT  TEST

It tests your verbal and mathematical skills through the two main scoring sections of the test. 800 is the maximum score you can receive by answering 37 multiple choice questions in the quantitative section and 41 multiple choice questions in the verbal section of the GMAT test. The quantitative section consists of problem solving and data sufficiency questions. The verbal section comprises questions on reading comprehension, sentence correction and critical reasoning.

The GMAT also includes an analytical writing section which is scored on a 6 point scale. Your response to this section does not form a part of the 800 score. The writing section includes two writing tasks of 30 minutes duration each.

You would take the test on a computer. The verbal and quantitative sections follow what is called the computer adaptive format. Under this format the levels of difficulty of questions adapt to your skill level. You receive questions of higher difficulty as you answer questions correctly and questions of lower difficulty when you make a mistake. As a test taker you need not worry about the format of the test. It in no way requires you to prepare any differently.

TAKING  THE  TEST

When to take the test: You must first decide on an ideal date for your GMAT. In addition to personal convenience factors you must decide on a test date depending on the application deadlines of schools to which you wish to apply and the time you require to be fully prepared to score well on the test. It can take up to a month for official score reports to reach the business schools and most schools expect official reports to reach them before their application deadlines. Most applicants prefer to take the test about two to three months before the school's application deadline so that the time between the test date and application deadlines is enough to complete the application forms, write essays and arrange original documents and recommendation letters for multiple schools. Based on this, decide on an ideal test date for you.

Registering for the test: After deciding on a date at your end, you must immediately check for availability of testing space at a location of your choice. This can be checked online by going to the official site of Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Click here. The seat availability can change quickly. If you are sure about the date and if it's available, you should register immediately. You would need to pay the required fee of US$250 by credit card.

If you are an international applicant and do not wish to pay by credit card, you can register at the Regional Registration Centers (RRC) of GMAC in your area.

Other things you should know: Besides being fully prepared to score your best in the GMAT you must be ready on the test date on these counts.

You should have with you a list of five schools where you wish to send official score reports. Reports to these schools will be sent free of cost. For additional score reports to schools outside your list of five you would pay an additional fee of US$28 for each additional school.

We all have our bad days and if during the test you realize that you haven't done well and have made more mistakes than expected, you have the option to cancel the test on its completion. (You cannot retake the test in the same calendar month) If you accept the test you will receive your unofficial score immediately on completion of the test. You will not have the option to cancel the test after viewing your score. An official report containing your score if you accepted the test or your decision to cancel the test will be sent to you and to the five schools you selected before starting the test.

If you are not happy with your score you are allowed to retake the test. Any number of times but not in the same calendar month or more than five times over a 12 month period. The official score report will include your last three test scores. Most schools say that they consider your highest test score in their evaluation. But we have seen that in most cases students are not able to substantially raise their scores in repeated attempts.
